Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and proactive Senior System Engineer to join our Systems and Application Services practice. This role focuses on maintaining our enterprise-grade VMware and HP storage infrastructure while also contributing to the broader system engineering tasks, including backup solutions, Active Directory, M365.
As a senior member of the team, you will lead infrastructure initiatives that ensure performance, resiliency, and operational excellence, especially in a remote management context. You will also help mentor peers and bring strategic insight into hybrid environments and future-state architecture planning.
Key Responsibilities
Core Infrastructure & Virtualization
- Manage VMware vSphere/ESXi environments, including provisioning, HA/DR setup, snapshots, and performance tuning.
- Administer HP storage systems (3PAR, Alletra, Nimble, or MSA) including LUN provisioning, tiering, and fault resolution.
- Maintain physical servers remotely using iLO or equivalent out-of-band management tools.
- Perform capacity planning, patching, and upgrades across the virtual and physical infrastructure estate.
- Monitor systems and respond to alerts/incidents using Splunk, Veeam ONE, and other enterprise tools.
Application Support
- Collaborate in managing services like Active Directory, Veeam Backup & Replication, and HP storage-based backups.
- Contribute to the support and improvement of M365.
- Provide Level 2 escalated support for infrastructure-related incidents and changes.
Automation & Documentation
- Develop PowerShell scripts or other automation tools to streamline operations and reporting.
- Maintain accurate system documentation, diagrams, and knowledge base content.
- Participate in change and release management meetings and uphold ITIL-aligned service operations.
Mentoring & Strategic Contribution
- Mentor junior system engineers and share best practices.
- Provide technical input for roadmaps and architecture reviews
Required Qualifications
Technical Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience configuring, maintaining, and upgrading VMware environments, including vCenter, ESXi hosts, vMotion setups, DRS clusters, and HA failover configurations.
- At least 4 years of experience managing HP enterprise storage platforms (e.g., 3PAR, Nimble, or MSA), including LUN creation, storage tiering, firmware upgrades, and hardware RAID configuration and troubleshooting.
- Minimum 4 years of experience administering physical servers, including performing BIOS/firmware updates, hardware diagnostics, and remote lifecycle management using tools such as HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) or similar.
- Experience in system monitoring and backup platforms (e.g., Veeam, Splunk).
- Familiarity with Windows Server, Active Directory, and cloud concepts.
- Scripting proficiency (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
Certifications
Mandatory:
- VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
- HPE ASE or equivalent storage certification
- ITIL Foundation is an asset
Preferred:
- Networking + or equivalent
- LPIC Essentials or equivalent
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft 365 administration and services integration.
- Experience working with Atlassian tools such as Jira and Confluence in an operational capacity.
- General exposure to Active Directory structure, group policy management, and domain services.
Work Environment & Expectations
- Operates primarily in a remote environment with secured remote access protocols.
- Supports global infrastructure across multiple data centers.
- Works in an 8x5 schedule with on-call rotation for escalations.
This role requires candidates to have their core working hours aligned with business operations in either Europe or North America, depending on assignment. Successful candidates must be able to work within these time zones to support regional offices, ensure effective collaboration, and provide timely operational support. Flexibility may be required for occasional meetings or critical incidents outside of core hours.
