Indonesia, with the longest coastline in the Asia-Pacific and the second-highest coastline-to-inhabitant ratio, is particularly susceptible to marine plastic pollution, with 80% of ocean plastics originating on land. The nation's extensive coastline, coupled with its status as the world's second-most biodiverse country after Brazil, heightens this vulnerability. Home to over 31,000 plant species and thousands of animal species, Indonesia's ecosystems face significant threats from plastic pollution. Microplastics and other contaminants invade habitats, pollute water, soil, and air, and pose severe risks to wildlife, often leading to fatalities and endangerment of species. Poor waste management, improper disposal practices, river and ocean pollution from tourism, and fishing activities are key contributors to this crisis.
To mitigate these challenges, Indonesia has implemented a national action plan targeting marine debris under Presidential Regulation No. 83 of 2018, aiming for a 70% reduction in marine plastic waste by 2025. By 2023, the country had already reduced plastic waste by 41.68%. Additionally, Indonesia has collaborated with the UAE under a UNDP-backed partnership to tackle riverine debris, intercept plastics before they reach the ocean, and align with its zero-landfill goal by 2030. To bolster these efforts, the recruitment of Project Assistant for Campaign of Waste Charity is critical. This role will facilitate collaboration on the waste charity movement, foster stakeholder awareness through community campaigns, and optimize information channels such as project websites to expand the reach and impact of this initiative, ensuring a sustained drive toward cleaner rivers and oceans.
