Program Background
The Australia Indonesia Partnership for Justice Phase 3 (AIPJ3) is a five-year, A$63 million investment by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to work in partnership with the Government of Indonesia (GOI) to support advancement of its priority law and justice reforms. Building on previous phases, AIPJ3 will support partners to deliver activities against agreed policy priorities, while maintaining flexibility to respond to emerging needs and opportunities. The program focuses on seven policy priorities that are important to Australia and Indonesia: accountability and transparency, criminal justice reform, preventing violent extremism, transnational crime cooperation, commercial law, access to justice, and women’s leadership.

The Role
The Research Analyst will be responsible for identifying and analyzing cases, events and academic research that potentially have a significant impact on AIPJ3’s operating context, activities, and reputation. The Research Analyst will provide clear summaries and updates to the AIPJ3 leadership, who will brief senior officials as required, either through regular updates or specific briefings. This will also help strategic communication be targeted to mitigate risks and amplify positive developments. The Analyst will also support the preparation of context updates in AIPJ3’s quarterly, six monthly and annual reports. The Analyst will access a range of sources at local, national and regional levels and critically evaluate potential bias and validity, especially in media sources. The Analyst will work with legal and case data available through Hukum Online, Kata Data and the Decision Database of the Supreme Court and will co-operate with AIPJ3 team members to access additional information through partners, ensuring compliance with government information and research standards. The analyst will contribute to knowledge products, working with AIPJ3 partners and academic institutions and will form a network among similar roles in partner organizations.

About You
Specific Responsibilities
- As part of the MEL team, maintain awareness and monitoring of the mainstream media, social media and academic research to identify relevant content for AIPJ3.
- Support AIPJ3 team members to identify and analyse cases, events and research relevant to AIPJ3’s reputation, operating context or activities.
- Prepare clear and concise reports to AIPJ3 leadership for briefing senior officials.
- Contribute to the updating of context in AIPJ3 reports.
- Establish and maintain a network among partners for people with similar roles and help identify and provide capacity building and access to tools and data.
- Contribute to knowledge products with partners and academics.
- Any other duties as reasonably requested by the MEL Manager.
Selection Criteria
Essential Experience and Knowledge
- Postgraduate qualifications in law, international relations or public policy
- At least 5 years’ experience in research or analytical roles focusing on justice or transparency issues in government
- Sound understanding of sources of data on cases and events, including sensitivity, protection of privacy and confidentiality
- Demonstrated objectivity and professionalism in reporting to ensure validity and proper disclosure, in line with Government regulations
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated understanding of gender, disability and child protection issues especially in research and reporting and ability to work with specialists in these areas
- Proven ability to network with people in the sector and academics to ensure a wide range of views are captured in research and analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare clear and concise reports in Bahasa Indonesia and English
